about

This album is unique in many ways: it is a concept album addressing mass incarceration that was conceived and written over three years inside a maximum-security prison; it is a multi-artist inside-outside collaboration expressly designed to make a powerful and sustaining intervention in the way Americans view those who are incarcerated, and to convey the talent, dignity, and humanity of people who have been justice-involved.

Yes, this album is rare: it is a love letter from the Songs community on the outside to those on the inside, but it is also their love letter to all of us, their opportunity to give testament to what is rarely spoken or even permitted in our culture: a chance to repair and to make amends for harm done. You will hear that testament expressed by voices that, in some cases, have not been heard in 40+ years, and you will hear it incarnated in cri de coeurs, in love songs, hip-hop, jazz, ballads, protest songs and anthems.

Songs in the Key of Free was founded on a core principle: Music summons us to our elemental goodness. This album is the purest testament to that claim in that it gives all of us, including the entire community of Songs—musicians, songwriters, producers, videographers, illustrators, photographers—a chance to reclaim the goodness that has been denied us, no matter what we’ve done or what’s been done to us.—August Tarrier, Founder and Director of Songs in the Key of Free
